How do I start a Wiki website?
Q. I'm looking to build a wiki website similar to Wikipedia, except about a single topic. I don't think this subject has been done with a wiki yet. I appreciate any help to these questions even if you don't know all the answers. 1. Would I have to do any programming (HTML) or is there a basic template to download? Link to this template? 2. Would it be hard to add Adsense? Is there a better advertising /revenue producing medium to use with a Wiki website? 3. Where's the best and cheapest hosting for a wiki website? 4. Would I have to write alot of the pages to get things going, or would people be willing to start it off? Thanks so much.

A. See for an overview on how to start a wiki. The easiest way is to go to Wikia.com since they provide free hosting for wikis and you wouldn't need to install the software yourself. They have staff available to help you with your wiki. You should expect to write most of the initial content yourself. People won't visit until there's something interesting for them to read which brings them there. You will need to learn wikitext, but it's much simpler than HTML. Wikia has a tutorial on this at

How is wikipedia managed and protected from abuse? Can individuals manage a wiki site?
Q. I own a website and want to create a wiki section into it. I am not sure if at all the wiki starts getting decent hits, how can I manage it then from abuse and also protect it from copyright violations.
Asked by aroopk - Tue Dec 2 13:45:39 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You will need help from your editors. Using User rights management promote trusted users to "sysop". Using the tools a sysop has, the ability to delete pages, block users, and protect pages, your sysops can control most problems. You may want to configure your wiki to allow only edits by those who have created accounts or have confirmed their email address. You can manage a wiki site by yourself if it is configured appropriately and it is not subject to sophisticated attacks.

How do I copy all the information from a certain wiki site to my own?
Q. There is a free wiki (using wikia) for a game I play, but it is extremely frustrating to view because of the plethora of advertisements. I want to build my own ad-free wiki for the game so people don't have to deal with all the ads. Is there an easy way I can transfer all the information into my own site, so it doesn't have to start from scratch?

A. Wiki is software that allows multiple users to create, modify and organize web page content in a collaborative manner. Modern wikis combine this basic wiki functionality with social networking, RSS feeds, blogs, and discussion forums. In a business setting, wikis are used for intranets, document management, information sharing - really, for just about anything. See case studies for business wikis at the website below. In education, wikis are used for classroom assignments by the teacher and students, and is the way of the future. There are a number of wiki software out there, that are low cost and some are even free.

How do you add a sound file to a project Wiki page?
Q. I am updating my wiki page for my engineering class, and would like to attach a sound recording that I took from my PC's recorder function. Any ideas on how to do this? I tried googling but didn't come up with any good answers, but I know it's possible. Thanks!
Asked by 807ayala - Mon Apr 13 21:59:53 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's the same basic process to upload sound files to Wikipedia as it is to upload images. Of course, if you're willing to release a sound file to Wikipedia under a free license, then you should consider uploading to Wikimedia Commons instead. Commons is a central free-content media repository, and files stored there are immediately accessible to hundreds of wikis. 1) Encode the file in the Ogg format, an open-source audio format that doesn't have the same patent issues as others. Ogg is currently the only audio format the Wikimedia servers will accept (please see the first source link below). 2) From a Wikipedia page, click the "Upload file" link on the left side. I've also included the English Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons upload… [cont.]

Q. I would like to add an events diary to a wiki and (for uninteresting reasons) I cannot use Google Calendar or equivalents. Does anyone know of a not-too-complex way of doing this? Tx

A. You can always make a calender on a website and on your dock go to preview, file, grab, and selection and select the calender and you'll have it as a tiff. file (this trick only works on macs)

How to make a wiki private and password protect it?
Q. I just installed MediaWiki on one of my computers to create a database. I will not be uploading it online, but just need it for personal use. How do I make it only editable by one user? And, how can I password protect the wiki to make it private?
Asked by M - Wed May 23 19:46:26 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You need a web server first, I suggest searching for one in Download.com and when you are done, host it on your web server. To visit it and edit (you must already have it on a web server), you visit this - or whatever kind of file type/name you have. For the password, just get a web server with password protection so if they visit your IP address, they need a password to enter.

I want to use a wiki as an easy to use knowledgebase. How should I go about doing this?
Q. I've installed the wiki software from wikimedia on our office intranet with the intention of making it into an easy to use knowledgebase. How should I go about doing this? I want to be able to use the search in a way that will bring back all relevant articles which contain those keywords inside any of the text. Anyone have any ideas how I should do this? You say MediaWiki has it all. I started adding content but it only really searches the main keywords in the title or the category, not in the text. Maybe i'm doing it wrong

Q. Anyone ever thought that it would be helpful to collaborate on health related issues - share health information about health conditions and staying healthy in a collaborative environment - a kind of wiki for health. I think it would be a great idea but what kind of hardware/software platform would be ideal for this?

How do you submit pistures on wiki?
Q. I went on wiki, and it said how to, but i dont get two things: 1) Does the photo or picture need to be your own? can i just get it from google images, save it on my computer, and use it? 2) What does ' you must explicitly state what copyright license you want to release it under' mean?
Asked by icecold2000 - Mon Jun 22 06:45:38 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 1) Yes the photo needs to be created by you using a camera, photoshop, MS paint or whatever. There are some other sources where you can get free images -- such as flickr and ; but Google images is certainly not one of 'em. 2) It means when you go to (or commons) to upload the picture, you must add the correct "license tag" from the drop-down menu. It has many options liek GFDL, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, PD etc.

A. The best way to handle that is to move the wiki into its own directory and create a static html page that links into the wiki. Unfortunately its not possible to prevent people from editing just one page in Mediawiki.
