What is a typical markup percentage for a builder?
Q. I am looking to buy new house and wondering what I should offer. I know the land in the area is being offered for about 1/2 the original lot prices and I am curious what a builders markup percentage is. This house was originally listed in May 07 and is still vacant.

A. His percentage has nothing to do with the price of beans. Do your home work and find out the value of like properties in the area. When you find out these details then make your offer based on what you are willing to pay and if they say no then they say no.

What is a typical markup for big box stores when they buy from manufacturers?
Q. I am looking for information on what is a normal expectation for profit margin from manufacturer to retailer, and the retailers expectation of profit margin? Specifically this would be a pet furniture product. Anybody a manufacturing expert out there?
Asked by tkkcpsi - Thu Feb 19 13:07:47 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is no definitive answer. Big box stores have many ways to arrive at their profits after they figure in all their costs. Produce and other perishables are marked up around 50% where non-perishables are around 33% for an overall profit as low as 17% in some cut rate stores. Some products are sold at a break even point to bring people into the store. These are called "loss leaders". If you do a volume business you can get by with a smaller margin. Less volume more margin.

What is the typical markup on an item sold at stores like Barnes and Noble?
Q. Say you have a product you want to get into Barnes and Noble. You've contacted them and they agreed to carry the product. Assuming the MSRP you give them for this product is $23.99, what would be a good price to offer for dealer cost?
Asked by E3_E3 - Thu Jun 19 17:47:18 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. bookshops pay 60% of list price. B&N and other giants pay less because it's a sliding schedule depending on # of books purchased. They also return a hell of a lot of books. They also demand and sometimes get 180 days credit. The smaller the vendor, the more likely it will be the last one paid.
